Massachusetts General Hospital's commitment to world class nursing education began in 1873 when the Boston Training School for Nurses opened. It evolved into the MGH School of Nursing, educating nurses through the combination of theoretical study and clinical practice. The School of Nursings renowned Director, Miss Ruth Sleeper, lobbied vigorously for the MGH to lead the world in nursing education at the advanced practice level. Her advocacy, and the vision of the hospital leadership, lead to a Master's level education program for the health professions that is now the MGH Institute of Health Professions. The MGH School of Nursing graduated its last class in 1981. The alumni remain active through the MGH Nurses' Alumnae Association.

In 1911, members of the Boston and Massachusetts General Hospital Alumnae Association launched the first issue of an alumnae news magazine. The editors did not “desire or expect it to be especially educational,” hoping rather for a “social” success. Their goal was to connect graduates of the esteemed MGH School of Nursing who lived throughout the world. The Quarterly Record has been in continuous publication in various forms since, marking its Centennial in 2011. Originally known as the Quarterly Record, the periodical solicited “news of the occupations, environments, successes, failures, marriages, births and deaths,” further stating, “We may be inspired, instructed and amused by exchanges of experiences.” The magazine eventually moved to publishing semi-annually, and in 1985 was renamed The Alumnae Record to better reflect its status. With a change in editors in 2005, the publication evolved into The Record, under which it continues to publish annually.
